Jose Fernandez, a pitcher for the Miami Marlins passed away this weekend from a boating accident in Miami Bay. He was only 24. The sports world continues to grieve as many speculate how this could have happened to an athlete with such a promising career.
Not only was he Rookie of the Year, but Fernandez had a touching story of how he came to the United States. He came from his home country of Cuba and managed to land on U.S. soil by boat on his fourth try!
His girlfriend, Carla Mendoza, has been featured on his Instagram and the two have been madly in love since they met.
The two just announced a week prior to his death that they were expecting. The couple has been together or at least 12 months.
The last thing he posted on social media was about his future with his beautiful girlfriend. "I'm so glad you came into my life. I'm ready for where this journey is gonna take us together," read his last post.
The police have not suspected any foul play or any use of drugs or alcohol for the deadly boat crash that killed three.
"There was joy with him when he played. And when he pitched, I think that's what the guys would say too," said Don Mattingly, the Marlins' manager. Players and coaches throughout the league were visibly distraught when addressing the media as the news of Fernandez's passing shocked the world.
